Applying to grad school can feel overwhelming, but it’s easier when you know what to expect and how to start. Here is a quick 5 step guide to help you get started on your application process.
Research Programs and Requirements: Every program is different, so you need to spend some time comparing schools and finding what program is the best fit for you. The goal is to find a program that meets your academic interests, career goals, and personal needs. Once you find a program that aligns with those things, you need to look at the requirements for applying. Important things to look at are admissions criteria, application deadlines, cost, and any funding or scholarship opportunities. To make it easy on yourself, you can create a spreadsheet that keeps track of all the schools you want to apply to and compares their deadlines and requirements.
Prepare Your Application Materials: Many programs ask for similar items when applying. Some of those items include your transcript, your resume, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and test scores. Some schools may ask for more than this; it just depends on the specific program you’re going into and your experience. Schools may also exempt you from having to submit things like test scores if you have met certain requirements in undergrad. Make sure that you’re requesting your transcripts and recommendation letters early so you’re not rushing near the deadlines.
Write and Refine Statements: The written statement is an important part of the application process. These schools want to know why you are choosing this program, why you’re interested in this field, and what your long-term goals are. They also want to see that your background and experiences have prepared you for this program. Make sure you tailor each statement to the specific school or program that you’re applying to.
Submit and Track Applications: Once all your documents are ready, you can start submitting applications to the schools of your choice. Double check and make sure you have uploaded all the required materials and you’ve paid any application fees so there aren’t any problems with your submission. Check your email frequently because some schools will send you an invite to interview or ask for additional information.
Look at Financial Options: While you’re waiting for application decisions, it’s a good time to research any scholarships or grants the schools have to offer. You can also look to see if they have any graduate assistantships or student jobs available. If you are working full-time while going to grad school, check to see if your employer has any reimbursement opportunities. Also apply for FAFSA to see if you can get any federal student aid.
I hope these tips were helpful in your grad school application process. You’ve got this!
